  • 1975 – Dr. William Rooney conceives of the idea for a therapeutic residential camp for children and adolescents who have social, emotional and/or behavioral needs.
  • 1976: Local professionals, William Rooney, Craig Sinesiou, & Rob Walk hold their first season at Brentwood Camp in Angelica, NY.
  • 1977: Camp moves to Elk Lick Boy Scout Camp in Smethport, PA.
  • ????: During one of these first years, in a competition to name the camp, a camper submits the name, “New Horizons”
  • 1981: Program begins admitting female campers
  • 1981: Certificate of Recognition, NY State Assembly and New York State Division of Youth
  • 1988: Program begins admitting teen campers
  • 1993: Good News Award for excellence in the area of human services/health in our community, Olean Area Promotion & Marketing Committee
  • 2002–2008: Featured in United Way Agencies' annual wrap-around in the Olean Times Herald
  • 2010: Camp New Horizons prepares for its 34th season.
