- 1975 – Dr. William Rooney conceives of the idea for a therapeutic residential camp for children and adolescents who have social, emotional and/or behavioral needs.
- 1976: Local professionals, William Rooney, Craig Sinesiou, & Rob Walk hold their first season at Brentwood Camp in Angelica, NY.
- 1977: Camp moves to Elk Lick Boy Scout Camp in Smethport, PA.
- ????: During one of these first years, in a competition to name the camp, a camper submits the name, “New Horizons”
- 1981: Program begins admitting female campers
- 1981: Certificate of Recognition, NY State Assembly and New York State Division of Youth
- 1986: Conrad Hecht Award for an outstanding mental health program, Mental Health Association in New York State
- 1988: Program begins admitting teen campers
- 1993: Good News Award for excellence in the area of human services/health in our community, Olean Area Promotion & Marketing Committee
- 1994: Camp moves to its current location in Allegany State Park
- 1998: Featured in a story in Mental Health Association in New York State's quarterly publication, Community Connections
- 2002–2008: Featured in United Way Agencies' annual wrap-around in the Olean Times Herald
- 2003-2008: Awarded the Dr. Lyle Renodin Foundation Grant.
- 2009: Recognized by the Mental Health Association in New York State's and awarded for Program Excellence.
- 2010: Camp New Horizons prepares for its 34th season.
