Matching Guidelines for Adults
As you begin your Compeer volunteer experience, you may have some questions. Following are guidelines we recommend you follow in your relationship with your new friend. If you have any questions or concerns with these guidelines or any other area of your Compeer relationship, please contact the Compeer staff.
What is my role as a volunteer?
Your role is to be a friend. Don't try to be a social worker, parent, taxi-cab service, probation officer, or counselor. It is more than enough to be a friend, role model, and advocate.
How can I be most effective as a volunteer?
Be consistent and dependable. Your friend must learn to trust you. Try not to break dates or make promises you cannot keep. Make every effort to be on time for scheduled meetings or call well in advance if you are unable to make an appointment.
Many of these items and more will be discussed during the free Compeer Training
- Is it wise to set goals for my Compeer relationship?
- Should I make plans or expect my friend to do so?
- Whose responsibility is it to arrange meeting times and to maintain telephone contact?
- How do I make plans with my friend?
- How is it suggested that I handle the cost of activities?
- Is it acceptable to give my friend gifts?
- How do I handle difficult requests by my friend or his/her family?
- Do I need anyone's approval for outings with my friend?
- Are there any activities we should avoid?
- What are my responsibilities as a Compeer Volunteer?
